Define density.
Think of the formula.
What is the unit of density?
Consider the components of mass and volume.
What formula is used to calculate density?
Remember the formula we discussed.
A substance with an R.D. of 0.9 will float in water.
Think about the relationship of R.D. to water.
A tank has various objects submerged in water: a metal cube (mass 10 kg, volume 2 m³), a rubber ball (mass 0.5 kg, volume 1 m³), and a glass bottle (mass 1 kg, volume 0.5 m³). Calculate the density of each object and determine which will float and which will sink. Explain why using R.D.
Calculate density for each object first from mass and volume.
A vessel contains two liquids: oil with a density of 800 kg/m³ and water with a density of 1,000 kg/m³. A solid object with a density of 900 kg/m³ is gently placed in the vessel. Discuss what happens to the object and explain using relative densities.
Compare the object's density with each liquid's density.
