Today, we’re going to talk about communication. Can anyone tell me what communication means?
Isn’t it just talking to someone?
Good start! Communication is actually a process of exchanging information, feelings, and ideas. It consists of a sender, message, medium, receiver, and feedback. Let’s remember those key elements with the acronym 'S-M-M-R-F'.
What do you mean by feedback?
Feedback is the response from the receiver that tells the sender if the message was understood. It closes the communication loop!
Can you give an example of feedback?
Sure! If I ask if everyone understands a topic and you nod or answer, that's feedback. Recap: Communication involves a sender, message, medium, receiver, and feedback.
Let’s discuss the different types of communication. Can anyone name one type?
Verbal communication?
Exactly! Verbal communication involves spoken or written words. But what about non-verbal communication?
That’s body language and gestures, right?
That's correct! Non-verbal communication can sometimes convey even more than words. Remember, there are also formal, informal, mass, and interpersonal communications. 'V-N-F-M-I' can help you remember these!
How do these types affect communication in Home Science?
They influence how messages are conveyed and received, especially in community settings.
Have you ever experienced a misunderstanding due to poor communication?
Yes! I didn’t understand what my teacher said because of background noise.
That’s a physical barrier! Other barriers include psychological factors like stress and semantic issues like jargon. Can anyone think of a cultural barrier?
Different customs or beliefs?
Exactly! It’s crucial to recognize these barriers to enhance communication effectiveness. Let's visualize these barriers with the acronym 'P-S-S-C-O'.
An essential process that involves sending and receiving information.
A method of educating individuals to improve their lives and communities.
A critical part of the communication process that confirms message understanding.
Multiple factors that can impede effective communication in various contexts.
Communication flows in a loop, with sender and receiver in a group, feedback will tell if you’re on track, understand that and never look back!
Imagine a classroom where a student raises their hand to ask a question after a teacher explains a topic. This exchange illustrates the principles of communication where feedback is crucial.
To remember the barriers: 'P-S-S-C-O' means Physical, Psychological, Semantic, Cultural, Organizational.
S-M-M-R-F stands for Sender, Message, Medium, Receiver, Feedback.
