What is an input device? Give one example each of a pointing device, a scanning device and an audio input device.
Think of how you point at things, how a page gets into a computer and how your voice does.
Write the full forms of OCR, OMR and MICR.
Two of them are optical, and one uses magnetism.
Which device would a bank use to read the cheque number printed at the bottom of a cheque?
The ink on that line is magnetic.
Which device is best suited to check thousands of multiple-choice answer sheets on which students fill in bubbles?
The machine only needs to find marks, not read letters.
A supermarket wants to speed up billing, keep its stock records accurate, record staff attendance and accept digital payments. Suggest a suitable input device for each task and justify your choice.
For each task, ask what data must be captured and whether a machine can read it directly.
A school library wants to digitise 200 pages of old printed records. Each page is scanned in black and white at 2480 × 3508 pixels, using 1 bit per pixel. (a) How much storage does one page take, and how much do all 200 pages take? (b) If OCR is used instead to store each page as text of about 3,000 characters at 1 byte per character, roughly how many times smaller is a page? (c) Give one more advantage of OCR. Take 1 MB = 1024 × 1024 bytes.
Find the pixels per page first, then convert bits to bytes by dividing by 8.
