Write the equation for the reaction of ethanoic acid with sodium hydrogencarbonate and state what you would observe.
Acids release a gas from carbonates and hydrogencarbonates.
Name a reagent that converts ethanoic acid into ethanoyl chloride, and write the equation.
Which reagent gives only gaseous by-products?
Which of these does NOT release CO2 from sodium hydrogencarbonate solution?
Which compound is not a carboxylic acid?
Which reagent converts CH3COOH into CH3CH2OH?
You need a very strong hydride reducing agent.
An acid A (C2H4O2) gives brisk effervescence with NaHCO3, forming the sodium salt B. When B is heated with soda lime it gives a gas C, and when a concentrated aqueous solution of B is electrolysed it gives a gas D at the anode along with CO2. A also reacts with ethanol, in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid, to give a fruity-smelling liquid E. Identify A to E and write the equations.
Only one carboxylic acid has the formula C2H4O2.
Explain the order of acidity: 2-chlorobutanoic acid > 3-chlorobutanoic acid > 4-chlorobutanoic acid > butanoic acid.
The inductive effect fades with distance along the chain.
