5 cards from this section. Quick, good the night before a test.
What is formed when sodium reacts with ethanol?
The gas formed is the lightest element.
What is Lucas reagent, and what is it used for?
It contains an acid and a zinc salt.
Which alcohol gives turbidity immediately with Lucas reagent at room temperature?
Find the tertiary alcohol.
Ethanol heated with concentrated sulphuric acid at 443 K mainly gives
Higher temperature, alkene.
Alcohol X has the formula C₄H₁₀O. It gives turbidity at once with Lucas reagent, is not oxidised by acidified potassium dichromate under mild conditions, and gives an alkene when its vapour is passed over copper at 573 K. Identify X and the alkene, and explain each observation.
All three observations point to the same class of alcohol.
1-Chlorobutane can be made from butan-1-ol using PCl₅ or SOCl₂. Write both equations and explain why thionyl chloride is often preferred.
Compare the physical states of the by-products.
