Today, we’re going to explore Human Resource Management, or HRM. Can anyone tell me what they think HRM entails?
I think it’s about managing people in a company.
Exactly! HRM focuses on optimizing how we manage our most valuable asset—our people. It involves planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the way we handle human resources.
What do you mean by controlling human resources?
Controlling refers to monitoring employee performance and ensuring it aligns with company goals. We can remember this with the acronym P.O.D.C: Planning, Organizing, Directing, and Controlling.
Let’s dive deeper. One of the features of HRM is that it's people-oriented. Why do you think that’s essential?
Well, if you focus on people, they are likely to be happier at work!
Absolutely! A happy workforce tends to lead to better performance. Another feature is that HRM is a comprehensive function. What areas do you think this covers?
I believe it involves recruitment and training!
Correct! It covers recruitment, training, compensation, and even employee welfare.
To make it memorable, remember the three key terms: R.T.C for Recruitment, Training, and Compensation.
What do you think the main objectives of HRM are?
Maybe to keep employees satisfied?
Yes! Maintaining high morale and motivation is crucial. More objectives include creating a skilled workforce and reducing employee turnover.
How do we achieve these objectives?
Through various functions. HRM functions can be divided into two categories: managerial, like planning and organizing, and operative, like recruitment and performance appraisal. We can use the mnemonic M.O.P. for Managerial and Operative.
That’s helpful!
In HRM, we keep people happy, trains and pays, with care, not snappy.
Imagine HRM as a gardener nurturing plants (employees) for a robust garden (organization). Each plant needs watering (training) and sunlight (motivation).
