Today, we will discuss migration. Can anyone tell me what migration means?
Is it about people moving from one place to another?
Exactly! Migration is the permanent or semi-permanent movement of people from one location to another. This can influence socio-economic factors in both origin and destination regions.
Are there different types of migration?
Yes! Migration can be classified as internal or international, and also by duration like permanent or seasonal. For example, moving from a village to a city is internal, while moving from one country to another is international.
Let's discuss why people migrate. What are some reasons people might leave their home?
Maybe because of a lack of jobs?
Correct! That's a push factor. Other push factors include poor healthcare and natural disasters. Now, what about reasons people might want to move to a new place?
Better job options or schools?
Exactly! These are pull factors that attract individuals to specific destinations.
Now that we’ve covered causes, let’s look at the impacts of migration. What do you think are some positive effects?
Migrants can fill labor shortages!
Yes! They contribute to economic growth. However, there can also be negative impacts, like overcrowding in destination areas.
And what about families being separated?
That's a significant negative effect, especially in cases like the migration from Kerala to the Gulf countries. There are benefits and costs to migration that we should always consider.
