Define osmosis.
Your definition needs three things: water, the direction, and the membrane.
What does "partially permeable" mean when describing a membrane?
'Permeable' means letting things through.
Osmosis is the net movement of which substance through a partially permeable membrane?
Osmosis is a special case of diffusion.
Water moves by osmosis from which kind of solution to which?
Water moves towards the side with more solute.
A student repeated the potato investigation three times at each concentration and recorded these percentage changes in mass. 0.00 mol/dm³: +10.2, +9.8, +10.6. 0.25 mol/dm³: +1.4, +1.0, +7.9. 0.50 mol/dm³: −6.1, −5.7, −6.2. 0.75 mol/dm³: −10.5, −10.9, −11.0. (a) Identify the anomalous result. (b) Calculate the mean for each concentration, leaving out the anomaly. (c) Estimate the concentration at which there is no change in mass.
An anomaly is a result that does not fit the pattern of the repeats.
A plant cell and a red blood cell are each placed in pure water. Explain, in terms of osmosis, why the red blood cell may burst but the plant cell does not.
Think about what the plant cell has outside its membrane that the red blood cell lacks.
