What is a motion in a formal debate?
It is the one sentence the whole debate is about.

It is about answering, not opening.
Prepare a case outline for the proposition on the motion "This house believes that the boys in Lord of the Flies needed stricter rules, not more freedom." Give three arguments with evidence from the novel, the two strongest arguments you expect from the opposition, and a rebuttal to each.
For each opposition point, decide whether to deny it, reduce its importance or turn it to your own side.
Design a complete thematic debate for your class on the theme of identity. Choose a text and a motion, assign roles, set the speaking order and times, write three rules of conduct, and write two reflection questions for after the debate.
Make sure the motion is debatable and that both sides have clear evidence to work with.
