Today we'll discuss the role of testing in product design, particularly focusing on prototypes. Why do you think testing is important?
It helps us know if our product works properly, right?
Exactly! Testing assesses a prototype’s performance, usability, and safety... we call that the 'PUS' criteria! Let's remember PUS: Performance, Usability, and Safety. Can anyone explain what each criterion means?
Performance checks if the product works like it's supposed to.
Usability is about how user-friendly it is.
Safety ensures it won’t hurt anyone, right?
Spot on! Testing helps refine designs using real feedback. This iterative approach improves the final results.
Once we test prototypes, gathering feedback is our next step. Why do you think feedback is crucial?
It shows us what works and what doesn’t!
Right! It helps in learning from mistakes. Can you think of an example where feedback changed a design?
I heard that many apps update because of user feedback; they fix bugs or add features.
Great example! It's a continuous cycle; we test, gather feedback, and then refine. This process ensures the final product meets the user’s needs.
After gathering feedback, we need to evaluate the results. How do we decide if a design is successful?
We check if it meets our PUS criteria!
Exactly! And what happens if it fails any of those criteria?
We have to modify the design until it works!
Perfect! Remember, the goal is to refine the product until it meets all requirements.
Before we move to production, why do you think final testing is crucial?
To be sure everything works as it should and it’s safe!
I guess it’s our last chance to fix issues.
Absolutely! Final testing gives a safety net and ensures quality before we launch the product. What are the risks of skipping this step?
We could end up making a product that’s faulty or even dangerous!
Exactly! Always remember, thorough testing helps safeguard users and enhances our design credibility.
The efficiency and effectiveness of a product's functionality.
How intuitive and user-friendly a product is.
The measures taken to ensure that the product does not pose any risk to users.
Essential insights for improving designs gathered from testing.
When a prototype is set to test, / Performance, Usability, & Safety -- we want the best!
Imagine building a robot for your school. You create a prototype, but before sending it to class, you test it thoroughly, ensuring it doesn’t break, is easy to operate, and doesn’t pose any risks to your friends.
Remember PUS: Pick Up Safety. This helps us remember Performance, Usability, and Safety are key in testing.
P.U.S. helps recall what we test: Performance, Usability, Safety.

This section emphasizes the importance of testing prototypes in product design to meet performance, usability, and safety criteria.
In product design, testing plays a crucial role in evaluating prototypes against specific success criteria such as performance, usability, and safety. Feedback from testing informs necessary design refinements, leading to better end products.
Testing is an essential phase in the product design process that involves evaluating prototypes against pre-established success criteria. This section discusses the key aspects of testing in product design, focusing on its importance in ensuring that designs not only meet functional requirements but also adhere to usability and safety standards.
After conducting test sessions, designers gather feedback that is vital for refining prototypes. This iterative loop — testing, gathering feedback, and modifying designs — is crucial for developing a successful final product.
