5 cards from this section. Quick, good the night before a test.
Name the acid formed when carbon dioxide reacts with water, and give its formula.
Its name comes from carbon dioxide, and it contains hydrogen, carbon and oxygen.
Surface seawater has a pH of about 8.1. Is it acidic, neutral or alkaline, and what does "ocean acidification" mean?
Compare 8.1 with the neutral value of 7.
Which ion becomes less abundant as the ocean absorbs more carbon dioxide?
Which ion do shell-building organisms need?
By roughly how much has the average pH of surface seawater fallen since the industrial revolution?
The ocean is still slightly alkaline today.
Plan a classroom investigation to show that dissolving carbon dioxide lowers the pH of water and affects calcium carbonate. State your variables, your method and what you would expect to find.
Change one thing only, and decide how you will measure both the pH and the effect on calcium carbonate.
(a) Calculate the percentage increase in hydrogen ion concentration if surface seawater changed from pH 8.2 to pH 7.8. (b) A newspaper headline says the ocean will soon be "as acidic as vinegar". Vinegar has a pH of about 3. Use pH values to evaluate the headline.
Work out the difference in pH first, then raise 10 to that power.
