Question 1.
What is modal truncation?
Show hintHide hint
Think about why we would reduce the number of modes.
Question 2.
What is the purpose of the modal mass participation ratio?
Show hintHide hint
Recall how we assess the impact of modes.
3Question 3.
What is modal truncation?
- Using all modes for analysis
- Considering only a few significant modes
- Ignoring all modes
Show hintHide hint
Think about efficiency in seismic design.
4Question 4.
True or False: The modal mass participation ratio helps determine how many modes to keep in analysis.
- True
- False
Show hintHide hint
Remember what it evaluates in dynamic responses.
Question 5.
A bridge has 1000 kg total mass, where the first modal effective mass is 300 kg and the second is 100 kg. Calculate the modal mass participation ratio for both modes. Discuss whether or not it is sufficient for truncation.
Show hintHide hint
Calculate each one using the formula and discuss the total.
Question 6.
A designer wants to verify the impact of truncating to the first three modes in a 10-story building. They find the first three modes capture 85% of the effective mass. Evaluate if this decision might lead to errors in the overall design.
