Welcome everyone! Today, we're discussing ISO TC268. Who can tell me what ISO stands for?
It's the International Organization for Standardization.
Correct! ISO TC268 focuses on developing sustainable cities and communities. Why do you think standardization is crucial in this context?
It helps ensure consistency and efficiency across different cities in how they approach sustainability.
Exactly! And it helps communities aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs. Can anyone name an SDG?
Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities!
Great! Remember that – 'Sustainable Cities and Communities' is essential for future urban planning.
ISO TC268 provides frameworks and guidelines. Why do you think these are important for communities?
They guide the planning and implementation of sustainability strategies.
Exactly! They also promote resilience against climate change. Can you think of what 'smartness' means in sustainable development?
It means using technology to enhance efficiency and decision-making!
Well said! Smartness includes technology to make cities more adaptive and responsive.
ISO TC268 has various working groups. Can anyone name an area they focus on?
Infrastructure metrics?
Yes! They also look at disaster risk reduction. Why is measuring infrastructure metrics important?
To assess how resilient and efficient the infrastructure is in supporting sustainable development!
Exactly! The better the metrics, the more effectively communities can respond to challenges.
Can anyone describe the role of indicators like the Green City Index?
They help cities evaluate their sustainability efforts quantitatively?
Correct! These indicators give communities the benchmarks they need. Why are benchmarks important?
They provide targets to strive for and ways to measure progress.
Great point! Monitoring progress is crucial for continuous improvement.
A standardization committee focused on sustainable development.
A framework of global goals to address various sustainability challenges.
The ability of communities to effectively respond to and recover from challenges.
Measurement tools to assess sustainability efforts within cities.
Standardization for sustainability, makes our cities a better reality.
Imagine a city adapting to climate change challenges through smart technology, guided by ISO standards, creating a resilient and thriving community.
Remember 'Sustainable Cities = ISO, Metrics, Resilience' to connect ISO TC268 with its objectives.
SMART: Sustainability, Metrics, Adaptation, Resilience, Technology.

The International Organization for Standardization, an independent, non-governmental international organization that develops standards.
Sustainable Development Goals, a collection of 17 global goals set by the United Nations to address global challenges.
The capacity of a community to recover quickly from difficulties or adapt effectively to change.
The ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
ISO TC268 focuses on standardizing methods and frameworks to promote sustainable urban and rural development, aligning with global sustainability goals.
ISO TC268 aims to advance the development of sustainable cities and communities through standardization efforts, providing frameworks, guidelines, and tools to help diverse communities enhance their sustainability while considering smartness and resilience. The standards and indicators introduced seek to support cities in defining and achieving their sustainability objectives.
ISO TC268 is dedicated to the standardization of sustainability efforts in urban and rural contexts. This section highlights the committee's goals to promote sustainable development by developing frameworks, guidelines, requirements, and tools that foster the realization of sustainability objectives. As communities strive for improved sustainability in compliance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ISO TC268 assists in defining clear objectives and implementing effective strategies. The committee oversees various working groups focused on crucial aspects such as infrastructure metrics, data exchange for smart community infrastructures, disaster risk reduction, and utility management. Additionally, it builds upon existing indicators and introduces new standards aimed at measuring sustainability initiatives, such as the Global City Indicators and the Green City Index, to ensure cities can systematically approach sustainability.
