Define kinetic energy.
Think of anything that is moving.
What is the formula for potential energy?
Remember the variables involved: mass, gravitational acceleration, and height.
What happens to potential energy as an object falls?
Think about what happens to an object as it gets closer to the ground.
True or False: Kinetic energy is zero when an object is at rest.
Consider when something isn't moving at all.
A rock of mass 3 kg is lifted to a height of 10 m. Calculate the potential energy gained. If the rock falls, how much kinetic energy will it have just before hitting the ground?
Use the same height in both calculations.
A bicycle of mass 12 kg is moving at a speed of 8 m/s. Calculate its kinetic energy. If the biker abruptly stops, what happens to that kinetic energy?
Remember to square the speed when calculating kinetic energy.
