2 cards from this section. Quick, good the night before a test.
Define conduction.
Think about how heat travels in a metal rod.
What is thermal conductivity?
Focus on materials like metal vs. wood.
What is the main mechanism of heat transfer in conduction?
Think about what happens at the microscopic level when heat is applied.
Is thermal conductivity constant for all materials?
Recall examples of good and poor thermal conductors.
Two rods, one made of copper and another of aluminum, both 1 m long with cross-sections of 0.02 m², are heated at one end to 200°C. Calculate the rate of heat transfer through both rods, given their thermal conductivities are 385 W m⁻¹ K⁻¹ and 205 W m⁻¹ K⁻¹ respectively.
Apply the conduction formula separately for each material based on their thermal conductivities.
A glass rod (K=0.8 W m⁻¹ K⁻¹) is 1.5 m long and has insulation on its sides. If one end is kept at 100°C, what temperature would be at the other end after 10 minutes if the heat transfer rate is known to be 15 W?
Rearranging the heat conduction formula will help isolate the unknown temperature.
